Refugees Now Given Just 10 Days to Challenge Loss of Legal Status, Raising Deportation Fears

A young man (L) leaves the Returning Migrant Attention Center in the vicinity of the Ramon Villeda Morales airport, where he arrived self-deported from the United States, in San Pedro Sula, 180 km north of Tegucigalpa, on May 19, 2025. A total of 38 Hondurans, including 19 children, who took advantage of President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant program, known as "self-deportees," received the equivalent of USD 130 in cash and food stamps upon their arrival, after being welcomed by the government of President Xiomara Castro. The Trump administration has reduced the time refugees have to challenge the revocation of their legal status from 30 days to just 10, a change that advocates warn could expose tens of thousands of people who fled persecution to deportation.

The policy, effective Wednesday, October 14, comes as the administration reviews the cases of at least 185,000 refugees admitted under former President Joe Biden whose applications for permanent residency remain pending, according to The Associated Press.
