Reflect on the European Super League a year after Leeds United led opposition to doomed venture

It's been one year since 12 European clubs revealed plans to break away and form a European Super League, a motion that shook the football world. The project that was once just a pipe dream finally became a reality when Europe's big clubs announce breakaway plans.

Leeds United were gearing up to face Liverpool at Elland Road with the news of the Super League breaking on the eve of the fixture, with Whites' players wearing t-shirts in protest against Jurgen Klopp's side. The Reds were among the Premier League's breakaway clubs, much to the distain of their supporters.

There has never been a more ill-timed insult towards fans, who were still unable to attend games in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The greed from the owners and board members at the 12 clubs sparked protest across Europe with fans left disgusted.

One silver lining of the Super League farce was the power that fans still have in the game when they unite. While they were unable to voice their dismay in their respective grounds, the various protests online and outside grounds were powerful enough to send a message to the out-of-touch owners.

Combined with fan uproar were the threats of serious sanction. However, the governing bodies have failed to deliver on those threats with the punishments much softer than originally mooted.
