Referees of Celtic games need danger money and VAR won't stop the fans whinging - Hotline

It's a sad week for Scottish football with the news VAR is finally on the way.

What the heck are we going to talk about after December when there are no contentious decisions, no referee gaffs and no arguing about biased officials?

I’m sure we’ll find a way, especially as it’s four days since the Scottish Cup semis and fans are still going at it over the man in the middle.

Rangers fans were hitting back at Celtic and Steve Macleod, Wokingham, said: “As ever after a Rangers victory there is the permanent inference that referees are biased in favour of Rangers. That wasn’t the case at the weekend and the stats prove it hasn’t been the case since time immemorial.

“It puts referees under intolerable strain and fear and it’s got to stop. Sometimes Bhoys, you just lose to a better team.”

Chris Lowe, Yoker, said: “Just so I get this clear Rangers didn’t win the game with an offside goal, like Celtic did with Chris Jullien in 2019, they didn’t get a dodgy penalty to win, they didn’t score in eight minutes added on time. No, they are actually moaning that some Rangers players should have been booked, while ignoring Celtic challenges.

“Rangers won fair and square, get over it.”

Chris McMenemy, Falkirk, said: “The most contentious decision took place after just two minutes, when VAR would've awarded Rangers a penalty.

“Could you imagine the scenes if that had happened, when you see the outcry over two non-bookings for Lundstram and Bassey. Anyone who referees a Celtic game should get danger money.”

Kenny Goff emailed: “They are at it already, Celtic already want refs on VAR changed. This lot complain at everything. Get a life and let the people on it do their job.”

Alfie Mullen, London, said: “Starting VAR in December is a crazy idea. It should be used from the beginning of the season. If next season goes anything like this season, Rangers will be robbed of points by December, due to dodgy decisions and Celtic will have gained points.”

While Allan McPherson, Cullen Moray, said: “As a supporter who follows his team home and away I would normally embrace the introduction of VAR but I fear that our incompetent officials are just not fit to be trusted with the technology.

“I don’t support either of Glasgow’s big two and I am not confident that the bias in favour of those two teams will be eradicated.”

Ah well. Celtic fans seem to be over the cup woe though.

Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “Who are Rangers fans trying to kid? We couldn’t care less about the Treble, when you’ve done a Quadruple Treble the novelty wears off.

“This season was all about crushing the Rangers dreams of getting to the Champions League and picking up the £40m prize, which they may have now have actually blown twice in one season.”

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “One day at the office for Celtic and all of a sudden Rangers are so much better than us. I’ll simply say this - Celtic are six points clear at the top of the league with goal difference better by 19 goals. The league table never lies.”

Seamie Gallagher, Glasgow, said: “I'm so proud that Celtic were even competing for a Treble in the transition period.

“Written off before a ball was kicked, this group of players have done remarkable things already and stand on the cusp of taking back the title we loaned to the Rangers last season. Onwards and upwards Ange.”

Shaun Maloney’s shock departure from Hibs has caused a stir.

Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “The Hibs board and owners should hang their their heads in shame in their treatment of Shaun Maloney.

“They tie his hands behind his back with player recruitment then after months sack him. I hope Maloney takes them to the cleaners.

“The setup will scare off a lot of decent managers.”

John Scott, Grassmoor, said: “ No ex Hibs players, no matter their standing in the game. No taking a chance with young coaches. No managers from smaller Scottish clubs.

“Dig deep and get a well respected, gnarly old timer with years of experience in the English Leagues.

“It’s now time to show real ambition and start by employing a manager who will take the job without twitching at the next available post away from Easter Road. Time to pony up.”
