'Redevelop much-loved Lisnagelvin Swimming Pool'

A petition is urging Derry City and Strabane District Council to consider redeveloping Lisnagelvin Swimming Pool.

The local council revealed in 2020 that the facility would be released to make way for new development.

Meanwhile, it was reported last year that retail giant Home Bargains wanted to open a store at the unused site.

However, it's understood that the £550,000 sale of the building was abandoned amid legal concerns.

The site, which opened in 1980, was closed by the council in 2015 and replaced by the Foyle Arena in St Columb's Park.

Derry man Kyle Doherty has started the Change.org petition with the hope of breathing new life into a campaign to get the facility reopened.

A statement on the website reads: "I call on the Derry City and Strabane Council to redevelop/open Lisnagelvin leisure centre.

"The swimming facilities currently for children are not fit for purpose in both the Foyle arena and the [Templemore] Complex.

"Children need a place to swim and have fun and from my experience as a child, Lisnagelvin was the best!

"The demand is there for a child and teenager orientated swimming pool in Derry, it's time to make it happen."
