The political map of every US election has a familiar pattern. Some states are red, some blue and a few which are watched far more closely than the rest.
These colours in a way indicate the political preferences of the states. Red states usually lean towards Republicans, while blue states generally favour Democrats. Then there are swing states, where either party can come to power and lastly, battleground states, where a particular election is expected to be especially tight.
