Record Viaplay Cup prize pot revealed as SPFL chiefs break down the winnings for 2023/24 competition

Next season’s Viaplay Cup champions will bank a record breaking sum after SPFL chiefs revealed a bumper £3million in prize money and TV income for the League Cup.

Over £2.3m prize pot will be shared between clubs with the winner taking home a highest ever £380,000 - up from the £350,000 that Celtic were awarded for beating Rangers in February. The runners-up will bank £175,000 - up £15,000 on last season - while semi final losers also gain to earn £10,000 extra on last year with a cheque for £110,000.

And fees paid out for all live matches in the competition - £17,000 for group games and £27,000 for ties thereafter - will nudge the total cash on offer to £3million. The Fife derby between Raith Rovers and Dunfermline on Saturday, July 15, has been chosen as the first of five group games to be beamed out live by the tournament’s sponsors.

Dundee United v Partick Thistle on July 18, Motherwell v Queen’s Park on July 22, Falkirk v Dundee United on July 25 and Dundee v Inverness Caledonian Thistle on July 30 have also been selected for live coverage on Viaplay.

All 40 clubs involved in the group stage will be guaranteed a minimum pay out of £24,000 from the prize pot which has increased a total of £200,000 on last season.

SPFL chief Neil Doncaster said: “Thanks to Viaplay's ongoing support of our primary cup competition, we are delighted to be able to announce record prize and TV money for the 2023/24 Viaplay Cup.

“We are very much looking forward to the tournament getting under way in mid-July, with the final at Hampden on Sunday December 17.”

Next season’s final will revert to the build-up yo Christmas, taking place at Hampden on Sunday, December 17. The group stages kick off a week later than last season - with the first fixtures to be played on the weekend of July 15/16.
