Ravi Shastri, Farokh Engineer to be honoured at BCCI Awards

MUMBAI: Two former India stars, allrounder Ravi Shastri and wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer, will be honoured with BCCI’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Shubman Gill, who enjoyed a breakthrough year in international cricket in 2023, during which he became the fastest to cross the 2000-run mark in ODIs and also scored five tons in the format, will be presented with the Cricketer of the Year award.

TOI had reported on January 10 that the BCCI was holding its annual awards for the first time since the onset of Covid in March 2020.

As is the norm, both the Indian and visiting English teams will attend the awards ahead of the first Test in Hyderabad.

Shastri, 61, represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs. Post retirement, he gained fame as a TV commentator. He also twice headed the coaching staff of the Indian team, first as a team director from 2014 to 2016, and then as the head coach from 2017 until the T20 World Cup in 2021.

An exciting batter in his time, the 85-year-old Engineer played 46 Tests, in which he scored 2611 runs@31.08. He played five ODIs too.

For several years, he played county cricket for Lancashire, and eventually resided in Manchester, serving the county as an administrator too.

Meanwhile, several players who excelled in domestic cricket, both at the junior and senior level, from the 2019-20 season to the 2022-23 season, will receive their BCCI awards on Tuesday.
