Raspberry Pi launches new Pico 2 computer in latest growth push

Raspberry Pi has launched a new computer model as the Cambridge-based business eyes further growth opportunities.

The model, called the Pico 2, which comes with the company’s new RP2350 chip, offers “faster processors, more memory, upgraded interfacing capabilities, and new security features,” according to Raspberry Pi.

It is now available to pre-order for £4.80 and is set to remain in production until at least 2040.

“With a higher core clock speed, double the on-chip SRAM, double the on-board flash memory, more powerful Arm cores, optional RISC-V cores, new security features, and upgraded interfacing capabilities, Raspberry Pi Pico 2 delivers a significant performance and feature boost, while retaining hardware and software compatibility with earlier members of the Raspberry Pi Pico series.,” Raspberry Pi said.

Raspberry Pi shares rose 2.5% to 283p.

The firm successfully completed its London IPO in June, and said it would use cash from the equity raised for engineering projects and improve its supply chain.

Raspberry Pi was founded by computer scientist Eben Upton in 2008 before releasing its first product in 2012.

It has since sold more than 60 million of its single board computers alone.

The group’s products are sold across more than 70 countries worldwide.

It is a subsidiary of the Raspberry Pi Foundation – a UK charity founded when the company was set up in 2008, with the goal of promoting interest in computer science among young people.

As a major shareholder in Raspberry Pi, the foundation has received around 50 million US dollars (£39.7 million) in dividends since 2013, which has been used to advance its educational mission globally, according to the group.

Raspberry Pi reported revenues of 265.8 million US dollars (£211.1 million) in 2023, with operating profits of 37.5 million US dollars (£29.8 million).
