Ranveer Singh deepfake video case: Cyber police register case against X user

The cyber cell of the Maharashtra Police has taken decisive action against the X handle for posting a deepfake video of Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh.

An FIR was lodged on Tuesday against an individual identified as an 'X user' for allegedly uploading a 'deepfake' video wherein the actor appeared to endorse a political party. According to reports, the complaint was filed by the actor's father, Jugjeet Singh Bhavnani, prompting the authorities to take swift action.

Besides Ranveer warning fans about the viral video, his spokesperson also confirmed that the actor was going the legal route to take the necessary action.

This incident follows a recent case where the city police registered an FIR against an unidentified individual for sharing a similar deepfake video featuring actor Aamir Khan endorsing a political party.

As per the FIR, the video in question altered Ranveer's video at a recent fashion show in Varanasi into a video featuring the star sharing his political views and falsely portraying him as endorsing a different political party.

Singh's father emphasized that the actor has no affiliations with any political party and never made the statements depicted in the manipulated video.

The FIR has been registered under pertinent sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 417 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation), along with sections of the Information Technology Act.

Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the creation and dissemination of the deepfake video.
