Ranking the biggest upcoming video game releases for September 2023

Fall is upon us, and with college football and the NFL set to return in just a few weeks, it also means that some of the biggest video games of the year are set to release ahead of the holiday season.

Xbox and PC gamers have been looking forward to Bethesda’s Starfield for years, the studio’s first new IP in the last 25 years. September will also deliver new NBA and soccer games for sports fans, and the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

But which game is truly the biggest release of the month? Check out our rankings below.

1
Baldur's Gate 3: September 6th (PS5)

Baldur’s Gate 3 gets the nod over Starfield as the No. 1 release of September because we already know it’s a gem. The rich, story-driven RPG has been wowing players over on PC since its initial release in August, and it’s a must-play for fans of RPGs or fantasy stories.

2
Starfield: September 6th (Xbox Series S/X, PC, Xbox Game Pass)

The latest massive RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, Starfield has been one of the most anticipated releases of 2023 – and if Bethesda can successfully capture the magic of Skyrim or Fallout in space, this could be a game of the year contender.

Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty: September 26th (PS5, Xbox Series S/X, PC)

Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most polarizing games of 2020 and CD Projekt Red has been working to optimize the game over the last two years. If you gave up or waited on Cyberpunk around launch, it may be a good time to dive back into Night City with Phantom Liberty, a new “spy-thriller expansion,”
