Josh Gentles has joined Airdrieonians on loan for the 2026/27 season, giving the Rangers striker a chance to play regular football.
The 18-year-old spent last season on co-operation loans with Raith Rovers and Alloa.
His campaign was disrupted by injury, but he continued his return with two goals against Partick Thistle a fortnight ago.
Gentles scored both in a 3-1 win for Malky Thomson’s Under-19 side in the Glasgow Cup.
The forward had impressed Russell Martin during last summer’s pre-season and featured for Rangers’ first team.
He will now spend the season at Airdrie in a straight loan move.
The deal is intended to help him play regularly and remain injury free.
He joins Northern Irish winger and Rangers team-mate Callum Burnside, who is also at Airdrie on loan.
Rangers manager Derek McInnes said: “We’re bringing them in to help the team and help others here. So hopefully, by bringing much-needed quality, it helps everybody.”
Rangers have won only two of seven fixtures since the start of the season.
Following a penalty shoot-out defeat to Jablonec, McInnes’ side face trips to Aberdeen and Falkirk within four days.
The results have increased pressure on the manager and his squad.
Minsu Kim became Rangers’ 12th signing of the summer on Thursday, joining from Girona for £8.5m.
A deal has also been agreed for Portland Timbers forward Kevin Kelsy to become the club’s 13th arrival.
That transfer is worth about £9m.
It remains unclear how the absence of European football will affect Rangers’ transfer plans.
However, the club will need a smaller squad with only domestic football to play.
McInnes said: “There’s no two ways about it, fans need to see more quality. I’m looking for a bit more quality, and hopefully, with that quality, it brings others on as well.”
He also said: “When you carry a big fee, as you do when you play for Rangers, you’ve got to deal with that. That’s part and parcel. That’s why we bring them.”
The manager admitted the squad were “all going to feel pretty miserable” until results improve.
Gentles will hope his time with Airdrie provides regular matches and allows him to continue rebuilding his fitness after last season’s injury problems.
