After Two Violent Weeks Rivals Agree on One Thing: The Dominican Republic Needs a Crime Dialogue

Lawmakers from the ruling party and the opposition called on Wednesday for a national dialogue on crime in the Dominican Republic, after the killing of a merengue singer's wife inside their home capped two violent weeks.

The debate matters well beyond the island. A study from the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute counts more than 737,000 Dominicans in New York City in 2020, and many of them send money to relatives back home.
