Rangers vs Napoli referee confirmed as familiar face returns to Ibrox

Rangers vs Napoli referee confirmed as familiar face returns to Ibrox

THE referee for Rangers' midweek Champions League clash with Napoli has been announced.

The Light Blues host the Serie A leaders on Wednesday, September 14.

The game kicks-off at 8pm - 24-hours after it was originally meant to

UEFA confirmed this afternoon that the matchday two clash would be pushed back by a day due to insufficient police resources being available in Scotland on Tuesday, September 13. This is because of the ongoing events surrounding the mourning of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

And taking charge of the rearranged match is a familiar face to those who attend European nights at Ibrox.

Spain's Antonio Mateu Lahoz will be the man in the middle for the fixture.

He endured a difficult night the last time he officiated a match at Ibrox, making one particular controversial call.

The 45-year-old is regarded as one of UEFA's most experienced referees, though.

He has taken charge of Champions League finals, as well as matched at World Cups and European Championships.

For his last visit to Ibrox, he took charge of Rangers' second leg Europa League clash with Borussia Dortmund in February this year.

Rangers progressed 6-4 on aggregate from the tie.

The match at Ibrox finished 2-2 on the night, with James Tavernier hitting a double for Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side.

It could, and probably should, have been a victory for Rangers, though.

Alfredo Morelos won the ball from Emre Can in the middle of the park. The Colombian raced towards the Dortmund goal before setting up Ryan Kent for a tap-in to make it three for the Light Blues.

However, VAR interevened and Lahoz was instructed to look at the monitor.

The Spaniard deemed that Morelos had fouled Can, and so the goal was chopped off despite there being little contact between the players.

Thankfully for Rangers, the decision by the whistler did not matter in the end.
