Rangers star's injury provides former Motherwell midfielder with first Scotland call-up

Former Motherwell midfielder Allan Campbell has landed his first Scotland call-up after being drafted into the squad to replace injured Rangers star Ryan Jack.

A calf injury has ruled Jack out of Wednesday night's massive World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine at Hampden and national boss Steve Clarke has called on Campbell to take his place in the squad.

The 23-year-old Fir Park academy product spent 13 years with the Steelmen before joining English Championship side Luton Town last summer.

And now Campbell, who won 24 caps for Scotland's under-21s, will get his first experience with the national side after an impressive season with The Hatters.

His inclusion also comes with a string of Nations League fixtures in mind next month, as well as the potential for Scotland to face Wales in the play-off final on June 5, if they can see off Ukraine.

Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows was delighted to see one of their own get the call.

He posted on Twitter: "Absolutely delighted for wee Al. If there is ever anyone who deserves it, it’s him!"

And Campbell's current club Luton stated: "We are pleased to announce that midfielder Allan Campbell has been added to to the Scotland squad for their upcoming FIFA World Cup Play-off and UEFA Nations League fixtures.

"The 23-year-old, who won four trophies at the recent Luton Town Supporters’ Trust presentation evening, has represented Scotland at Under-21 level 24 times and will now join up with Steve Clarke’s squad ahead of the play-off match against Ukraine on Wednesday.

"Campbell made 39 appearances in all competitions during his debut campaign at Kenilworth Road and we would like to wish Allan all the best with the Tartan Army!"
