The sacking of Gio van Bronckhorst continued to dominate the Hotline with as many Celtic fans as Rangers supporters throwing in their tuppenceworth.
And there was no shortage of advice for the Ibrox board either - including a call for Neil Lennon to be given the gig as things to took an unexpected turn in one of the most bonkers editions of the long-running call in yet.
Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh said: “Whilst I was sorry to see Van Bronckhorst lose his job , then I would urge the Rangers board to go for Bodo Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen. He works wonders with small budgets and would bring some good players to Ibrox. Sean Dyche would only head back to England if a bigger job came up there.” Eddie Easson, Ballingry, Fife emailed: “Rangers are in an almighty hole of their own digging. They brought the saviour back in GVB, who took them to a European final then the fire sale began.
“Shocking recruitment by a board who are clueless with no financial clout. All profit from last season just about to be wiped out. The terrible thing is the people who put them there are still there making the big decisions. Should be an interesting AGM.”
Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: “I’m sure Ange Postecoglou won’t be losing sleep if Rangers appoint so called returning messiah Michael Beale. He’ll still be working with the same players who threw Van Bronckhorst under a bus and to reinvest in the squad he has to move on Kent and Morelos which is no easy task.”
Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “Well so much for Gio having Ange sussed as he waves bye bye to his second victim as Rangers manager and Rangers wave bye to over £4m in compensation. And to top it off we have supporters of the worst team in Champions League history trying to slag us off for our fringe team losing a friendly to Sydney FC. What a hilarious week.”
Neil Renton, Edinburgh, joked: “There’s only one man who can save Rangers. He knows the club and Scottish football well, would fire up the players with a passion, he’s got a point to prove against Celtic and he’s currently without a club. It’s a no brainer. The Ibrox side should replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Neil Lennon.”
Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, emailed: “When Michael Beale rejected Wolves, he knew Rangers would want him, but it’s a big test for him. It will take time and there’s no quick fix. It will be difficult to turn it around with no new players until New Year and also a big slice of luck needed to claw back a killer nine point deficit for this present team. That looks a bridge too far, winning the domestic cups seems more doable.”
Andrew Adams, Kirkcaldy, said: “Michael Beale is not the answer for next Rangers manager, he’s nowhere near experienced enough to take on the job. Who do we get? I’ve not a clue, but this is a big appointment so it had better be right.”
John Bruce emailed: “Gio may be gone, but Rangers fans will remember him for bringing the club’s first Scottish Cup win in 14 years and that historic run to the Europa League final in Seville. Not enough to name a hospitality suite or a wall outside Ibrox after it, but we will remember him for those great times. We will also take Gio’s early exit as a statement of intent by the board that they want to win this league and 56. Let’s go - again.”
Tam Bain said: “I can’t believe the mentality of those Rangers players/fans/board if they don’t win the league ,sack the manager. Don’t they realise no matter who is in charge, they would probably sack him too. Scottish football has no money - get over it Gers and Celts, you can’t compete.”
Onto the World Cup and Ian McLauchlan emailed: “Banning the “One Love” armband just shows how ridiculous FIFA are, threatening a booking. Some team should take a stand, and the rest should follow
As an alternative, why don’t all the teams wear the rainbow laces, are they going to book them all?”
Alan Lough, Dunbar, said: “Sky Sports respond to England beating Iran by saying ‘the Three Lions roar’. Really! They played a team who are ranked 20th in the world and are cannon fodder at best. The jingoistic hysteria just never knows when to give it a rest ,does it? Hilarious.”
