Rangers hoping ‘phenomenal’ support can roar them to SWPL title

Malky Thomson welcomed the huge support that will cheer on his Rangers side at Ibrox on Sunday as they look to finish the day as SWPL champions.

Glasgow City are top of the table on 80 points, two ahead of Rangers and Celtic going into the final fixtures of the season, while there is a complicated scenario involving goal difference and goals scored which could come into play in the three-way shoot-out.

City have the most straightforward task. They head to Rangers knowing a win guarantees them the title, while Celtic host Hearts at Parkhead, and Gers head coach Thomson is glad to see 10,000 tickets have been sold so far for Ibrox.

Celtic recently beat Glasgow City 3-1 at home in front of 9,553 fans – a new record attendance for a domestic women’s game in Scotland.

Thomson said: “I think we are touching 10,000 just now and we still have a couple of days to go. The interest has been phenomenal.

“Certainly all my players, my staff, myself have had phone call after phone call asking about tickets.

“It is great, fantastic, exciting. It is exhilarating.

“The responsibility is on the players, the staff, myself to continue promoting the game and making sure we train hard and work hard to put a good product on the park.

“The girls have done a lot of work to get here, to claw back nine points to get us back in to this situation where we have some sort of control.

“We speak a lot about what we can control. The only thing we can control is planning and preparing properly as we have done, going into this game with the absolute mindset that we are going to win the game.”
