Rangers are reportedly deep in talks over a £5m transfer deal to sign Olwethu Makhanya.

It's claimed Ibrox chiefs are closing in on a deal to sign the South African centre-back this summer.

The Scottish Sun report recruitment staff are in discussions with Philadelphia Union officials over a transfer for the 22-year-old.

It's thought the defender is the number one target for Rangers as Derek McInnes looks to bolster the backline.

However, the MLS club want to receive a £6m fee for Makhanya. Rangers, though, are keen to thrash out a deal in the region of £5m.

Makhanya was at the World Cup with South Africa but didn't play at the tournament.

McInnes revealed on Monday that he is hopeful of Rangers signing at least one player before the league opener against Dundee United on Friday. There could even be two arrivals.

He told Sky Sports: "I'll speak with the recruitment team after training. These conversations have been ongoing.

"I think we are close to getting one done, and we are actively trying to get one more done before the weekend, all being well."
