The month of Ramadan is a time for reflection, contemplation, and celebration for Muslims across Bristol and around the world. It's marked by fasting from early morning to sunset each day as observers shift their focus to prayer and spiritual reflection.
Ramadan 2023 is set to be the first Ramadan to fully return to normal in a few years in a post-pandemic world. Last year, Bristol saw the return of the Grand Iftar for the first time since 2019, although some Covid measures were still in place around the UK.
It is one of the most important dates on the Islamic calendar observed by around 1.8 billion Muslims across the world. It sees practising Muslims (and those without a health exemption) fast from sunrise to sunset to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity during that period.
