Rail services shut down as huge fire breaks out at south London station

Rail services were halted after a massive fire broke out on train tracks between Peckham and Bermondsey on Tuesday evening, causing travel chaos for Londoners.

The fire broke out between Queen's Road Peckham and South Bermondsey railway stations.

Three fire engines and approximately 15 firefighters were rushed to the scene, trains were stopped in both directions and power was cut.

Passengers at Queen's Road Peckham Railway station were evacuated, and trains were cancelled and delayed for the remainder of the evening.

In videos shared to social media, the huge fire can be seen illuminating the night sky.

Addressing the incident on X, ThamesLink wrote: “The fire brigade are dealing with an incident between Tulse Hill and London Bridge.

“While they carry out their work all lines between these stations are closed. Disruption is expected until 23:00”

Transport for London said there was a "fire on the track" on Tuesday night and that no service was running through the station. It also warned of delays on the Windrush Overground line.

The London Fire Brigade said: "Fire crews are tackling a fire on train tracks above arches. Passengers have been evacuated from Queen's Road Peckham Railway station. There are no reports of any injuries.

"Trains have been stopped in both directions and the power on the tracks has been isolated to allow fire crews to gain access to the track.

"The Brigade's 999 Control officers received the first of 90 calls at 2049 alerting them to the fire.

"Fire crews from Greenwich, New Cross and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the scene."

Trains were running again by the early hours of the morning.
