Rafa Benitez makes Real Madrid comparison for Graham Potter amid Chelsea pressure

Graham Potter has been warned of the new type of pressure that faces him at Chelsea.

Potter's Brighton side finished ninth last year and had a host of stand-out results including a 4-0 victory against Manchester United, but the 47-year-old has been told that statement victories won't be enough if he wants to be a success at Stamford Bridge.

After replacing one of the most popular managers in the club's history, Potter has high expectations. He was able to transform the Seagulls into one of the best ran organisations in the league and was given time to achieve his goals on the south coast. Potter now has the task of turning Chelsea's poor start to the season around.

With no match for his new side until October 1st, Potter has time to get used to his surroundings after a turbulent couple of weeks. The pressure that faces him once games start up again in two weeks will be a new challenge though and former Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has given Potter a message.

"The first thing I will say is that he did and is doing a great job," the Spaniard told Sky Sports. "When you have good ideas and they give you time then maybe you can develop something. The environment was good for him but at the same time, and I always use the example of Getafe, there are too many teams like Getafe in the comfortable zone.

"The difference between finishing 10th and 11th is nothing, between eighth and 15th maybe you don't have any issues and you can play the style that you want, if you lose it doesn't matter because there's the next game. He will feel the pressure and hopefully he will do well because I like him."

Potter did feel angst at the Amex Stadium last season, drawing boos from the crowd after a 0-0 draw with struggling Leeds. Since then Brighton have won 10 of their last 15 matches losing just two. The result that drew the frustration came after a six match losing steak and was greeted by Potter in a defiant mood, saying: "They're entitled to their opinion but I disagree with them, completely. You have to understand the game, who we're playing against, how we played, what we did. We're sitting eighth in the Premier League but maybe I need a history lesson in this football club."

Potter's ability to turn around the fortunes included beating Arsenal and Tottenham shortly after that result and demonstrated the calibre of manager he is. The comparison that Benitez was making, to Getafe, appears harsh given the Spanish club finished 15th. The fact that they did manage to beat Real Madrid does highlight that having important victories throughout a season can compliment a long stretch of poor form for mid-table sides, this isn't a luxury Potter will have at Chelsea.

"He has to win," says Benitez. "Now there is no time for 'oh we are playing nice football for six months' and after having won nothing. That happens for the majority of the teams. 'But we play nice football.' What have you won? 'Nothing.' That's it. You carry on.

"I like to be competitive and to win, Graham Potter has to now go to a team that has to win, has to be in the top four, has to challenge for trophies and everyone will be demanding it. Playing nice football and finishing ninth, great achievement but now you have to win and you have to compete against Manchester City, they have money, Liverpool, they have money, Manchester United. Arsenal or Tottenham. I think it will be more demanding for him and he has the knowledge, can he manage the pressure? We'll see in the future."

Chelsea fans won't accept a big win here or there to feed their desire, as Benitez says, and although one win against Madrid might be the highlight of Getafe's season, Chelsea and Potter will be judged on the trophies he wins and the progress he makes over the long-run.
