Rachel Zegler takes on a new role in the upcoming A24 disaster-comedy feature Y2K, directed by Kyle Mooney. The film is set to hit theaters on December 6 and follows the story of two high school juniors who find themselves in a life-threatening situation after crashing a New Year's Eve party on the last night of 1999.
The star-studded cast includes Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, and Mooney himself. The trailer for Y2K showcases a wild party turning disastrous as electronic devices from the turn of the century go haywire, posing a threat to humanity. One scene even features a Tamagotchi drilling through a character's head, adding a darkly comedic twist to the chaos.
Despite the mayhem, the characters find moments of connection amidst the madness. Martell's character reflects on the night, acknowledging its challenges but finding solace in the unexpected bond formed with Zegler's character.
Mooney, known for his work on Brigsby Bear, makes his directorial debut with Y2K, co-writing the script with Evan Winter. The film premiered at South by Southwest earlier this year, receiving praise for its performances and unexpected plot twists.
Zegler, who gained recognition for her role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, continues to expand her acting portfolio with projects like a voice role in Netflix's animated movie Spellbound and the lead role in Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White.
Y2K promises to deliver a unique blend of comedy, disaster, and coming-of-age themes, offering audiences a fresh take on the turn of the millennium. With a talented cast and creative storytelling, the film is poised to captivate viewers when it hits theaters this December.
