A bat found inside the Bucyrus city limits has tested positive for rabies, Crawford County Public Health announced on Oct. 21. The county submitted the bat to the Ohio Department of Health Laboratory on Oct. 20; the lab confirmed rabies the next day, and no human bites were reported, according to the county's announcement on Crawford County Now.
The case still involved a household. The homeowner found his dogs outside playing with the bat while it was alive, a potential rabies exposure for the animals. The dogs had previously been vaccinated against rabies, and the owner is following his veterinarian's post-exposure instructions.
