It is easy to assume that if most people support something, it must be right. But history repeatedly shows that this is not always the case. An action does not become morally justified simply because it is widely accepted, supported or practised.
Leo Tolstoy captured this idea in the striking words: “Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it.”
