Queen shares touching Prince Philip tribute as Charles 'wipes eyes' at mention of Duke

The Queen has paid a heartfelt tribute to her late husband in a powerful address.

The monarch said Prince Philip had played a crucial role in protecting "our fragile planet" - and praised son Charles and grandson William for carrying on his work.

Prince Charles was seen wiping his eyes at the mention of his father, who died last year aged 99.

Alongside a projection of the Duke of Edinburgh beamed onto the walls of Buckingham Palace, the Queen said in a recorded speech: "It is a source of great pride to me that the leading role my husband played in encouraging people to protect our fragile planet lives on through the work of our eldest son Charles and his eldest son William.

"I could not be more proud of them."

The 96-year-old monarch was not present at tonight's concert, which celebrates her 70 years on the throne, but was understood to be watching at home in Windsor Castle.

Earlier, a sketch was broadcast showing her meeting Paddington Bear - and revealing a marmalade sandwich she carries around with her.

As the beloved bear shows the Queen what he hides underneath his hat, The Queen confirms “So do I,” before prising open her bag and remarking “I keep mine in here.”

Senior palace sources revealed the Queen jumped at the chance to get involved in the skit and was so intent on her performance not leaking that she didn’t tell members of her own family.

Prince Charles has paid tribute to his "much-missed Papa" in a speech at this evening's event.

He made the sweet remark in front of a crowd of 22,000 as he paid tribute to the Queen during a star-studded Jubilee concert this evening.

"Your family now spans four generations. You are our Head of State. And you are also our mother.

"Your “strength and stay” is much missed this evening but I am sure he is here in spirit…

"My Papa would have enjoyed the show and joined us wholeheartedly in celebrating all you continue to do for your country and your people."
