Queen is waiting in the ballroom where she danced with Prince Philip

The coffin of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has been placed in the ballroom of Balmoral, where she danced with her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The coffin has been draped in the Royal Standard and staff have been paying their own respects in private.

The Queen will remain in the ballroom until her coffin is carried to the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, and then taken on to London ahead of a state funeral expected to be held on September 19. The Queen had been seen dancing in the ballroom since she was a young child and footage from 1991 shows her alongside Philip, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles, and Princess Diana in the room.

King Charles was at his mother's bedside in Balmoral, alongside his sister Princess Anne when the Queen died. The Queen's children, as well as Prince William, rushed to Balmoral after doctors announced they were "concerned" for her health.

Charles was first to arrive by helicopter from Dumfries House in Ayrshire, while Camilla - now Queen Consort - was driven up by car from Birkhall, the couple's Scottish retreat.

Anne was reportedly already been with her mum, after undertaking local engagements. A Range Rover driven by William arrived at the estate's gates at 5.06pm, with Princes Edward and Andrew, as well as the Countess of Wessex, in the passenger seats.

The Queen's death was announced at 6.32pm. Prince Harry - who cancelled the remainder of his tour to be at his grandmother's side - heard the news while he was still in the air.

A period of national mourning has begun, and will last until seven days after The Queen's funeral.
