Mourners from across Scotland are expected to descend on the capital today to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II following her death at 96.
Millions lined the streets yesterday as her coffin left Balmoral for the final time for the six hour journey to Edinburgh, where it remained overnight at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Today will see her taken to St Giles’ Cathedral, with the public already gathering in their thousands on the streets ahead of the procession to be led by King Charles.

Queen's coffin procession plans ahead of state funeral - September 12
Timeline of events:
- King Charles will walk behind the Queen's coffin at around 2:25pm, according to the BBC, where they will travel from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles' Cathedral
A service to celebrate the Queen will be held at 3pm today until 5pm
- Members of the public will be able to view the coffin which will lie at rest in the cathedral for 24 hours
- King Charles will then travel to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and meet Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, where he and the Queen Consort, Camilla, will attend the Scottish Parliament where members will deliver a motion of condolence
- In the evening, King Charles will hold a vigil with other members of the Royal Family at St Giles' Cathedral
Her Majesty The Queen will lie at rest at St Giles’ Cathedral following the Service before her journey to London, allowing mourners to pay their respects to the late monarch, with those wishing to view the Coffin at Rest being able to do so today (September 12).
The processions will be taking place in Edinburgh after 2pm with those wishing to see the coffin being able to do so from around 5:30pm until 3pm tomorrow (September 13) with large crowds expected.
Already people have been lining the streets in their thousands with Edinburgh Live reporting that locals and tourists have been spotted camping out hours early for the last chance to see the Queen before she leaves the capital. After departing Scotland, the late Queen will be taken to Edinburgh Airport by RAF flight to Northolt - just outside of London - where she will then be driven to London accompanied by Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, for her state funeral.
The grieving King Charles III and Queen Consort, Camilla, will fly into the capital today to take part in the services where the coffin and royal cortège will travel up the Royal Mile to St Giles’ Cathedral. Charles will lead some of the royals – expected to be the Duke of York, Earl of Wessex and the Princess Royal and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence – on foot, while the Queen Consort and other members of the monarchy follow in cars.

Long queues are expected, and people are being asked to be prepared to wait hours. Photographs will not be allowed to be taken inside St Giles’, while security checks will also be carried out.
Once in London the Queen lie in state at Westminster Hall from Wednesday until the morning of her funeral on Monday, September 14.
