A 31-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder after a 30-year-old woman and her 11-week-old baby were found dead in their Queensland home.
Emergency services were called to the home on Bean Street in Park Avenue, Rockhampton, just before 11am on Thursday, when they discovered the bodies.
9News has now reported that the woman was 30-year-old Tayla Cox and the 11-week-old baby was her child, Murphy Margaret. The man charged with their murder was Matthew Cox — husband and father to the two victims.
A police statement said the bodies were found after Matthew allegedly travelled down to Brisbane following the incident and reported the deaths to police.
According to 9News, Matthew allegedly reported he had killed his family when attending Fortitude Valley Police Station in Brisbane this morning.
Police believe that Tayla and Murphy died two days ago on August 8, prior to Matthew flying from Rockhampton to Brisbane later that same day.
Matthew has now been charged with murder (domestic violence offences) and will face court tomorrow.
Daily Mail Australia reported that neighbours allegedly heard gunshots on the Wednesday night, but Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow has since shut down claims that there was a firearm used in the alleged crime.
Shadlow also said it was a “confronting scene” for first responders.
One neighbour described the area to the Courier Mail as a quiet neighbourhood, and another said she knew the woman who had died. She described the household as a “generic, loving family”.
