PUNE: The Ramwadi underpass, which was closed for the past eight months for work related to Metro, was reopened for vehicular traffic on Thursday.
The slip roads on either sides of the underpass were also opened for traffic. The resurfacing of the underpass has also been done and the leakage issues have been resolved.
Some residents of Kalyaninagar, however, said the median at the Ramwadi underpass needed to be properly constructed to avoid any accident.
The underpass has been of much help for people travelling to the airport from the Koregaon Park area and also those coming from the airport and moving towards the eastern part of the city. The underpass also connects Kalyaninagar and Vimannagar.
The residents had been waiting for long for the underpass to be reopened. The officials had first given a deadline of six months. After that, dates had been extended repeatedly.
Shruti Panda, the parent of a child studying at a private school in Kalyaninagar, said, “Reopening of the underpass has come as a big relief. The school has started with offline classes. Traffic snarls were becoming an everyday affair during the school’s opening and closing hours.”
She said, “Many vehicles had to take a long detour to go towards Vimannagar when the underpass was closed. Some motorists would also resort to wrong-side driving to avoid the snarls. Considering all this, reopening of the underpass was much needed."
Nadia Nathani, another local resident, said, “Now that the underpass is open again, it will also save a lot of time for the commuters.”
Nathani added, “As I travelled through the underpass after its reopening on Thursday, I noticed that the median was not constructed fully. It could lead to accidents. The civic administration should look into the issue as well.”
