Pune: PMC to conduct structural audit of bridges & flyovers

PUNE: The civic body has decided to conduct structural audit of bridges and flyovers more than 10 years’ old under its jurisdiction ahead of the monsoon.

“The revenue committee has given a go-ahead for carrying out the audit. The PMC will spend around Rs1.3crore for the purpose, and funds have been approved for it,” said a senior official of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s traffic planning department. Structural audit of all 44 elevated thoroughfares, including flyovers, in civic areas will be conducted, said a PMC official.

The civic administration has carried out audit of bridges and flyovers, which are 25 years’ old. After that, audit of bridges which are 20 years’ old was conducted. Now, bridges, which are more than 10 years’ old, will be studied. There are some bridges in the PMC areas which are more than 100 years’ old.

“The PMC will study joints, bearings, pillars and tarring of bridges and flyovers. If any replacement is needed, it will be done. The actual work is expected to start next month. The bridges and flyovers which are weaker or against which complaints have been raised will be audited on priority,” said a senior official of the civic body.

He said that, if needed, bridges and flyovers needing repairs will be closed to traffic. After completion of repairs, commuters will be allowed to use them again.

Shrinivas Bonala, traffic planner, PMC, was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.
