PUNE: Public properties, be they new roads, flyovers, chowks or government schemes, need to be identified by a name. This is where political parties, who have a major say in the titling, propose and push through the names of personalities from their outfits for these properties. Unfortunately, limited thinking has ensured that one personality’s name adorns multiple properties, leading to confusion among citizens.
For instance, the city has three flyovers named ‘Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee’ — at Agriculture College chowk, Shankarsheth road and the new Metro flyover bridge at Nal Stop, Kothrud. Similarly, multiple roads, chowks, housing colonies and slums have been named after former prime ministers Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, as well as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
