PUNE: In a brazen act, five men armed with a chopper and a firearm barged into the office of an Angadia (private courier) service provider at Gultekdi Market Yard and robbed cash Rs29 lakhs before fleeing towards Satara road around 11.30am on Saturday.
One of the intruders fired a round on the office floor to deter the owner and his employee from putting up any resistance while the other used a chopper to smash a glass cover before the duo threw whatever cash parcels, they could lay their hands on to the remaining three accomplices, police said.
The incident has been captured on CCTV cameras inside the office located behind Ganaraj market, a four-storied building near Gate No 2 of the market yard, the region’s biggest wholesale trading hub in the city.
This is the second incident of its kind involving an Angadia service, a sort of parallel banking system wherein traders send cash, gold and diamonds from one place to another through couriers known as Angadia, in the last three months.
On August 26 this year, a gang of six men had opened fire and robbed two Angadias of Rs3.6 crore on the Pune-Solapur highway. The police had arrested the culprits in that case and had made recoveries.
