PSA: PS5 consoles can’t use PlayStation Plus to play online after installing latest update

The PlayStation 5 got a new update today, which was accompanied by confirmation that VRR (variable refresh rate) support would be coming to the PS5 in a future console update. This is good news for the future of Sony’s console, but it seems to have come with a problematic bug: PS5 consoles are unable to use online features after installing the update, as noticed by VGC.

Players began reporting this issue shortly after the update became available to download. As of the time of writing, any PS5 that has installed the update is unable to play games that require an online connection, including the majority of Gran Turismo 7, all of Destiny 2, GTA Online, and more.

The issue only currently seems to be affecting games that require PlayStation Plus subscriptions for online play. Apex Legends, for example, works perfectly as it does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play online.

If you currently attempt to play games that do require a PlayStation Plus subscription, however. GTA Online, for example, will be unable to connect to Rockstar’s servers. Elden Ring, meanwhile, will state that it cannot verify your PS+ subscription as the game starts, preventing PVP battles, bloodstains, and those “helpful” messages.

Hopefully this is a short-term issue and Sony will have a solution ready within a few days, as currently this is a huge inconvenience for PlayStation Plus subscribers who pay for these benefits.
