With Sony planning to kill off discs for good starting in January 2028, a sort of arms race began between PS5 emulators, which are now making tremendous progress with each passing day. We went from only being able to boot games into black screens to actually navigating menus and even rendering 3D environments, all in a week’s time.
As we can see from Techjunkie Aman’s posts on X, SharpEMU, the most popular of the PS5 emulators, only needed a day to progress from booting Demon’s Souls Remake into a black screen (with a bunch of glitches to boot) to actually navigating the game’s menus where you choose body types, create your character, and so on. This is a game that is only available on the PS5, meaning getting it to run will give us a strong grasp of emulating native PlayStation 5 applications.

Demon's Souls running on SharpEMU.
Left: Yesterday.
Right: Today.
The speed at which PS5 emulation is improving is remarkable.
