Protesters killed in Kashmir as elections erupt into violence

Several protesters were reportedly killed in police firing in Pakistan-administered Kashmir during regional elections on Monday.
At least 14 people died when security forces allegedly opened fire on supporters of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) in Rawalakot.
The JAAC, a civil rights group, was attempting to march towards the regional capital, Muzaffarabad, demanding subsidised food prices and the abolition of specific legislative assembly seats.
The dispute escalated after a regional Supreme Court ruling upheld the refugee seats, which the group argues give disproportionate political influence.
Overall, approximately 40 people have been killed in poll-related violence since early June, leading to the suspension of mobile and internet services and a revision of election dates.
