Plans for land at the current Neath Leisure centre on Dyfed Road are set to be discussed by Neath Port Talbot Council. Discussion on the future of the site was deferred this week at the authority's Education Skills and Well-being Cabinet Board, held on Wednesday, September 28.

The site of the current facility is set to be closed and left vacant in the coming months when a new state-of-the-art leisure facility in Neath town centre opens sometime during the autumn of 2022. The multi-million pound development, which has been designed to bring in new activities and investment to the area, forms part of a massive redevelopment project for Neath town centre, and will include a two-storey 7,082 sq m development with a swimming pool, 100-station gym, café, library and six commercial units.
It also comes alongside announcements from the council earlier in the year, that indoor leisure facilities in Neath Port Talbot would come back to the local council's control instead of its previous management at Celtic Leisure. However, it seems as though the current site on Dyfed Road may not be a part of council's leisure plans moving forward, with proposals to declare the land and premises surplus to requirement once the move has taken place now on the table.
If approved, responsibility for the vacant site would transfer to the head of property and regeneration for future lease or disposal, with the existing buildings on the site being demolished, and a master plan for the site developed setting out suitable alternative development opportunities.
