Producer of Huw Edwards drama describes reading broadcaster’s disturbing texts

  • Channel 5's drama Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, starring Martin Clunes, dramatises the events leading to the broadcaster's 2024 guilty plea for making indecent images of children, focusing on his grooming of a 17-year-old.
  • Executive producer Samantha Anstiss described reading Edwards' "disturbing" texts, which formed part of the script's primary source material, as like "going into the heart of darkness" due to their unsettling nature and imbalanced power dynamic.
  • The anonymous victim, referred to as "Ryan Davies" in the drama, was deeply involved in the production, reviewing scripts and providing access to texts, ensuring accuracy and his perspective.
  • Edwards was charged in June 2024 with three counts of making indecent images of children, admitting to possessing 41 photographs, and received a six-month suspended prison sentence in September 2024, also being placed on the sex offenders’ register.
  • Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is scheduled to air on Channel 5 at 9pm on Tuesday 24 March.
