- Huntley, 52, died nine days after an alleged attack with a metal bar in a workshop at maximum security HMP Frankland on 26 February.
- Russell appeared at Teesside Crown Court via videolink for a preliminary hearing, confirming his name and date of birth.
- He was not asked to enter a plea, with a pre-trial preparation hearing scheduled for 24 April at Newcastle Crown Court.
- Ian Huntley was serving a life sentence for the 2002 murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire.
