Prince Harry discusses how Queen reacted when he announced he was stepping down as senior royal

Prince Harry has revealed how his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, reacted when he announced he was stepping down as a senior royal.

Harry and his wife Meghan Markle made the shock announcement on January 8 2020 saying they planned to become 'financially independent' and move to North America. The decision to "step back as 'senior' members" was named on social media as "Megxit" -

A statement from the couple at the time stated that they would continue to support Her Majesty The Queen, continuing to fully support 'Her Majesty The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.' They also said they intended to use the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of a new charitable entity - which went on to become the Archewell Foundation.

In an interview with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America on Monday (January 9), the Duke of Sussex insisted his grandmother the late Queen was not angry or upset with him about wanting to step down as a senior working royal.

Michael asked: “Did she ever express that she was upset at you?” to which Harry responded: “For what?”

Michael replied: “For wanting to change your role.” Harry said: “No. My grandmother and I had a very good relationship. It was never a surprise to anybody, least of all her.

“She knew what was going on. She knew how hard it was. She never said to me that she was angry. I think she was sad that it got to that point.”

It comes as Harry's tell-all memoir, Spare, is published tomorrow (Tuesday January 10). The book will explore Harry's life as a member of the British royal family and how he coped with the death of his mother, Princess Diana.

It promises 'raw, unflinching honesty' from the Duke of Sussex and will be 'full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom,' according to its official description. It's believed the book has been named after the term 'the heir and the spare' which is used to describe a monarch and their sibling.
