Prince Harry arrived at Balmoral after Queen's death had been announced

Prince Harry appeared devastated as he was seen arriving at Balmoral following the death of his grandmother the Queen

The Duke of Sussex, the last of the family seen to arrive, was wearing a black suit and tie as he sat in the back of a car as it pulled into Balmoral, reports the Scottish Daily Express. He flew into Aberdeen Airport alone.

Prince William, the Duke of York, the Earl and Countess of Wessex landed at Aberdeen airport at 3.50pm. They then headed in a fleet of cars, including a Range Rover driven by William, with Andrew in the passenger seat and Edward and Sophie in the back. They arrived at Balmoral Castle just after 5pm.

Just after 6.30pm, Buckingham Palace released a statement to confirm the death of Queen Elizabeth II to the nation. It read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

Prince Harry and his wife were already in the UK to attend a charity event in the evening but they later cancelled appearances. Meghan, like the Duchess of Cambridge, did not attend the initial gathering but will join their husband at a later time.

The ex-Royals are ambassadors of the WellChild Awards - which celebrates the inspirational qualities of the country's seriously ill children and those who go that extra mile to make a difference to their lives - in London this evening.

The duke has been patron of WellChild, the national charity for seriously ill children and their families, since 2007 and despite stepping down as a working royal has maintained his links with the organisation.

The heir to the throne Prince Charles, seen carrying a briefcase, took a royal helicopter to Balmoral from Dumfries House with his wife this morning. Princess Anne was already at Balmoral after an engagement this week.

The last time the Sussexes saw The Queen was in June amid the celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee, when they introduced her to their daughter Lilibet - named in honour of Her Majesty's childhood nickname - for the first time.
