Potential new future for city's former Grammy Award winning studio

Revised proposals have been put forward for the redevelopment of a former recording studio that has hosted the likes of Coldplay and Rihanna.

More than three years ago, it was confirmed part of the former Parr Street Studios building could be demolished to make way for a series of apartments. The plans caused shockwaves in Liverpool’s music and cultural community, with world famous acts descending on the city over the years.

After initial designs were signed off in December 2021 for the site of the former Grammy Awards winning studios, a review of the scheme has led to fresh plans being put forward to Liverpool Council.

Almost two years ago, the city council signed off on plans for the historic site to be redeveloped into a range of multi-storey buildings, including 36 apart-hotel units and 114 apartments. A new planning and regeneration statement submitted by P J Percival Construction Northwest Ltd said following a “comprehensive review” of the project, fresh proposals have been put forward.

Now, the firm is seeking to develop 56 apartments, with an additional 20 aparthotel suites and four commercial units. The new documents, received last month, also include a request for the development of an eighth floor function room, with basement facilities including a spa, sauna and pool.

The report said: “The development is designed on behalf of the applicant company who are working closely with an interested aparthotel tenant and a number of other commercial operators who are keen to deliver the development.”

The new aparthotel scheme would seek to provide accommodation for “people visiting and working in the area a place to dwell, not just stay for the night.” The report added: “They will have access to supporting facilities from the 24-hour management service, with flexi workspace provided in the first floor.

“The aparthotel model is to provide high quality ‘home from home’ short to long term visitor accommodation for both corporate and leisure guests alike. All rooms are equipped with kitchenette facilities and offer spaces for guests to sleep, relax, work and prepare their own food.”

Subject to approval from Liverpool Council, the revised plans will see the majority of the internal structures and external walls behind the Parr Street façade removed due to structural issues, costly interventions and expert advice from the client’s structural engineer, Clancy.

Before its relocation to Liverpool’s fabric district, artists such as Atomic Kitten, Badly Drawn Boy, Barry Manilow, Beautiful South, Bjork, Black Sabbath, Diana Ross, The Charlatans, Moby, Pulp, Stereophonics and Take That all recorded at the studios.
