ITV respond as Portugal Vs Uruguay World Cup match halted by pitch invader with rainbow flag

Portugal's World Cup clash against Uruguay was halted in the second half after a fan carrying a rainbow flag ran onto the pitch.

The game resumed shortly after as the fan was dealt with by security and Portugal went on to take the lead after Bruno Fernandes' cross went all the way in.

The fan was also wearing a shirt that had 'save Ukraine' written on the front and 'respect for Iranian women' on the back. The supporter was wearing a blue shirt with the Superman badge on but it also carried messages of support for groups that have been treated unfairly by Qatar.

There are strict laws against LGBTQ+ people and little has been done to settle the nerves of the community throughout the tournament, hence the rainbow flag. Armbands, flags and shirts have been clamped down on by FIFA and Qatar throughout the tournament too.

The other messages refer to the Ukranian war currently happening and the Iranian brutality, violence and murders of protesters in the country after the death of Mahsa Amini. Iranian players have taken their own stand on the issue by not singing the national anthem and later choosing only to mouth the words due to threats against family and friends at home.

ITV cut away from the images of the fan but did address the actions after the game, with presenter Mark Pougatch saying, "We did have a protestor here this evening with a rainbow flag, you can see it says ‘Save Ukraine’ on the front of his t-shirt and ‘respect Iranian women’ on the back of his t-shirt."
