A viral clip appeared to show the 68-year-old singer continuing to deliver vocals while her mouth was not moving, prompting some viewers to accuse her of relying heavily on playback and one critic to brand her the 'Queen of Lip-sync'.
The moment has quickly become one of the most discussed parts of her long-awaited VMAs comeback.
Madonna Opens the VMAs After 23 Years
Madonna opened the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday, 27 September, marking her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years. The return was billed as a major moment for the singer, who entered the night as the show's most-nominated artist.
The performance featured songs from her latest album, Confessions II, with Sabrina Carpenter joining her for 'Bring Your Love' before Charli XCX appeared for 'Danceteria Afterhours'. The elaborate production included dancers, dramatic lighting and multiple stage elements.

One X user, @EnjoyMissJanet, posted: 'Madonna singing without moving her mouth!?? 😭😭' alongside the hashtag #VMAS.
Another user, @Dit_GagaFan, went further, writing: 'This is who y'all call "The Queen of Pop"? Madonna is more like The Queen of Lip-sync to me.'
The post also claimed that Madonna could move freely because she allegedly did not have to focus on her vocals and breath control.
However, the short clip alone does not establish exactly what was happening with the performance audio.
