Alexei Popyrin has stumbled at the first hurdle for the second straight year in his season opener, run down by on-song French qualifier Quentin Halys as Australia's men struggled at the Brisbane International.
The local hope battled to make inroads on the Halys first serve, losing 5-7 6-3 6-4 in just less than two hours on Monday at Pat Rafter Arena.
