Baby names expected to be huge in 2023 - including day of the week and sports heroes

Expectant parents in 2023 will be taking inspiration from England's World Cup 2022 squad, the Lionesses and big Netflix hits, according to recent predictions.

Popular culture often influences our baby name choices, and 2023 will be no different. It was a huge year for sport in the UK, with the Three Lions reaching the quarter finals in the World Cup, while the Lionesses won the Women's Euro's.

The squads are expected to leave a lasting impression on prospective parents, with the name Jude, after England ace Jude Bellingham, predicted to rise in the charts, according to British name label manufacturer mynametags.com.

The name Jack, which came back into the top 10 list in 2022, is also expecting to see a surge in popularity after Jack Grealish melted hearts with his goal celebration for Finlay, a young fan with cerebral palsy.

Female football heroes are also set to influence naming decisions this year, with Beth, Ella and Alessia all expected to grow in popularity in 2023.

Many parents turn to TV shows when looking for inspiration, and with Netflix's Wednesday being the second-most watched English language show ever, it's expected the main character's name will be used more than before.

Monikers of iconic Peaky Blinders characters Arthur and Tommy have been used consistently since the release of the first series in 2013, and with the final episode airing in 2022, they are set to remain popular.

In 2022, Arthur was the 11th most popular boys' name, with Tommy dropping down from 24th to 43rd spot.

Names inspired by top music artists are also due to make an appearance in 2023. Following the success of her second album, Happier Than Ever, Billie Eilish will continue to inspire parents choosing monikers this year.

Lars B Andersen, Managing Director at My Nametags, said: "We know from experience that baby name trends are often influenced by pop-culture, including TV, film, and celebrities. Sporting personalities make excellent role models, so it's no surprise that parents continue to be inspired by their generation's biggest heroes when it comes to naming their children.

Girls name Wednesday will likely grow in popularity this year (Netflix)

"2022 was a huge year for football fans, we can definitely expect the men's World Cup and Women's Euros teams to have a significant impact on the name charts over the next year, especially with the Women's World Cup taking place this summer.

"Popular TV shows and artists continue to have a major influence over the popularity of certain names as they give inspiration but also confidence to parents, especially with unusual names like Wednesday."
