Fried chicken restaurant Popeyes has confirmed the opening hours and launch plans for its first restaurant in Wales next month. The chain recently expanded to the UK and following the success of opening branches across the country it will open its first Welsh branch in Cardiff on March 23.
Founded in Louisiana more than 50 years ago Popeyes offers a selection of American-style chicken products including fried chicken sandwiches, hot wings, and tenders as well as American-inspired sides and sweet treats. Popeyes restaurant will be based in St John Street and bring life back to a unit that has been left empty for more than five years. To celebrate the launch Popeyes will welcome customers with a Mardi-Gras style band, Brass Funkeys, on its first day.
On opening day customers will also have a chance at winning a free year’s supply of the brand's chicken sandwiches. The chain has more than 3,700 restaurants in more than 30 countries around the world. It arrived in the UK in November 2021 with the first branch opening at Westfield shopping centre in Stratford while there are now a further 16 stores across the country.
Popeyes UK CEO Tom Crowley said expanding into Wales "was an obvious choice for us". He added: "Our first restaurant will open in Cardiff just a stone’s throw from the castle and a short walk from the Principality Stadium. We can’t wait to bring our iconic product and a taste of Louisiana magic to this buzzing city.”
Popeyes Cardiff will open at 11am on Thursday, March 23. The restaurant will be open seven days a week between 10.30am and 10pm.
