Pope Leo XIV's lung cancer diagnosis has drawn attention to his family's history of the disease. Both of his parents died of cancer, and his eldest brother, Louis Prevost, is also receiving treatment.
The 71-year-old pontiff's diagnosis was confirmed during surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, 13 October. Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung during an approximately 90-minute operation, with tissue examined during the procedure confirming pulmonary adenocarcinoma.
