Poor-quality eggs sold online? FSSAI seeks explanation from Blinkit amid customer complaints; know safe storage tips and health benefits of consuming eggs

Eggs are widely regarded as a superfood because of their high protein content and essential nutrients. They are known to support weight loss, improve metabolism, and offer several health benefits. With the rise of e-commerce platforms, buying eggs has also become more convenient for consumers.

However, concerns over egg quality sold online have recently come under scrutiny. According to a PTI report, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has asked quick-commerce platform Blinkit to explain consumer complaints related to the sale of poor-quality eggs through its platform.

Several consumers have reported issues such as foul smell and rubbery texture in eggs, officials said, adding that e-commerce platforms are equally accountable for ensuring the quality of products.

According to PTI, FSSAI has taken "suo-moto cognizance" of complaints posted by customers on social media and on Friday issued a notice to Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, asking the company to submit a "comprehensive ATR (action taken report)" within a week over the matter.

FSSAI guidelines on storing eggs

According to FSSAI, eggs can remain fresh for nearly 10 to 12 days after being laid when stored at a room temperature of around (28±2°C). However, their shelf life may reduce in hotter conditions. The regulator noted that temperature plays the biggest role in preserving freshness, while humidity also has some impact.

FSSAI further stated that eggs should ideally be stored in dedicated refrigerator shelves or egg trays to help retain their quality. The food regulator also advised consumers to purchase eggs from shops that store them at cooler temperatures or in properly ventilated covered spaces while maintaining suitable ambient conditions.

Health benefits of eating eggs daily

Experts say that consuming one egg every day can provide the body with around 75–76 calories, 7–8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fat, and nearly 1.6 grams of saturated fat. Eggs are also packed with essential nutrients that support muscle growth, strengthen immunity, and aid in the repair and regeneration of cells and tissues.

According to experts, each egg contains more than 6 grams of protein, making it an excellent food choice for children. One egg can fulfil nearly half of the recommended dietary protein intake for toddlers and close to one-third of the daily protein requirement for older children.

Common ways to enjoy eggs

Boiled egg – Simple, healthy, and easy to prepare

Omelette – Made with vegetables, cheese, or herbs

Scrambled eggs – Soft and fluffy breakfast option

Fried egg – Popular with toast, rice, or sandwiches
