Trading for Russell Wilson signals a new era for Broncos Country. Now, George Paton must surround his franchise QB with the necessary pieces for the Broncos to make a Super Bowl run next season.
In addition to trading for Wilson, Paton signed Randy Gregory to presumably replace the void caused by trading Von Miller last year. Other notable signings thus far include K’Waun Williams to play nickel back, Billy Turner to compete at RT, Alex Singleton to compete at ILB and solidify the special teams unit, and D.J. Jones to presumably replace Shelby Harris.
With less than three weeks until the NFL draft, let’s see where the team can still improve.
RB: With Melvin Gordon still unsigned in free agency, the team needs a 1B to Javonte Williams’ 1A. Fantasy football managers, though, are hoping Williams’ sidekick gets drafted on Day 3 — or not at all.
LB: The Broncos still need an elite cover linebacker for the second level of the defense. In today’s game, backers are basically bigger safeties. As in a passing league, it’s imperative these position players can cover TEs [Travis Kelce and Darren Waller] and RBs. At worst, these players can not be liabilities.
TE: Yes, Albert Okwuegbunam is poised to be the next Noah Fant, while Eric Tomlinson will be the inline TE in 12 personnel [1 RB, 2 TEs], a running formation. But, in theory, the team needs to replace Fant, at least his roster spot, as most teams carry three TEs. Kyle Rudolph may fill this void before the draft, though.
Bonus: pass-rush help: If Bradley Chubb or Randy Gregory go down, opposing QBs may be able to camp inside the pocket until a pass-catcher uncovers [see 2021 Broncos].
