A row erupted over Boris Johnson's Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday as he sought to reset No 10 in the wake of the 'partygate' scandal.

Jacob Rees-Mogg was been handed the role of Minister for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency, while Mark Spencer, the current Chief Whip, replaced him as Leader of the Commons.

Chris Heaton-Harris, a prominent Eurosceptic and former MEP became Chief Whip, while Stuart Andrew is the tenth new housing minister in the space of 11 years.

Mr Spencer's appointment was attacked by Labour after he broke cover last month to deny incendiary claims by Nusrat Ghani, a vice-chairman of the 1922 Committee, that a whip said her "Muslimness" was raised at a meeting that led to her sacking two years ago.

Thangam Debbonaire, the shadow Commons leader, said: “This is just the latest in a long line of appointments that demonstrates this Government’s complete disregard for standards in politics.”

Meanwhile, Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, appeared to take a swipe at the fact that the reshuffle only included men, joking on Twitter: "Who said dull men don't fail upwards?"
