Police searching for woman after fire broke out in her tower block flat

Police are searching for a woman who lives in a tower block where a fire broke out yesterday (June 14).

Officers say they are ‘looking for the tenant’ due to ‘concern for [her] welfare’. A fire broke out at Mossbrook Court, on Kentford Drive in Collyhurst, on Wednesday night.

The Manchester Evening News understands that the fire started in the flat of the tenant in question. The incident, which happened shortly before 11.30am, left other residents ‘scared’.

One man, who lives on the tenth floor of the tower block, said: "The smoke was as high as the fifth floor. They got us out and they got the fan to clear the smoke out.

"We can’t get back in because the lift is not working. This is the first time [I’ve seen a fire]. It scared me.

"You tell yourself you need to get out down the stairs and the smoke came up as far as the fifth floor. I have never seen anything like that before."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added that ‘six fire engines from Manchester central, Blackley, Philips Park, Salford central, Broughton and Gorton fire stations’ were scrambled to the scene.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene,” they went on. “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used two hose reels and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.”

Following the incident, Coun Pat Karney, who represents the area, said: “The emergency services, led by a prompt and professional fire service — that sent seven appliances — prevented any spread of the fire in the block. We believe the tenant has gone missing."
